ryuujin_kuro10:09pm: A question
Are there any other board reps in this community who know where the retreat is and what time we have to be there? I tried to open up the attachment in the email that was sent out but it didn't work.

rush03048:29pm: As some of you may have heard New York City Public High Schools are as of monday not being allowed to have all electronic devices when entering their respective buildings.

I can understand cd players, mp3's, Ipod's, they are distraction's, and disencourage discussions, and take away from the goal to learn. However cell phones, and any forms of communication are needed if anything to at least have as a safety guard. We just came off within 5 years of the biggest tragedy in this city. Many kids in these schools needed to get in touch with their parents to tell them they were ok, and unforutnately some parents did not make it due to that tragedy I am referring to 9/11. If you the board of ed want to impose this, than enforce this on all faculty not just kids, you are unfairly singling out those who carry cell phones and other forms of communications who actually do use this just to phone in mom or dad to tell them there ok. Things happen in life, and many of these schools however have not implanted the use of pay phones in schools, or even will allow some of these kids to on an emergency phone in to say everything is ok.

Hey I understand the concept of this, but what I dont like however is cell phones are not a toy people do really use these things in case of an emergency. I have a brother who is in high school, if he couldn't get in touch with his mother, and father how would they feel? You read about all the time how that one cell phone call save's someone's life.

The New York Board of Education like it or not have a responsiblity and that is to ensure safety of the many kids who enter these schools, I understand this concept, but how about hiring more cops, ensuring settings where these situations won't occur, increase the level of suspensions, encourage kids if they see something tell someone, heck the MTA does so, why can't the board of ed do the same.

I think a ban on some devices is totally fine, however cell phones now a days are important, almost as important as having an Id on you. You be the judge? Worrying about if your kid got home, or having them call to say Mom and Dad I am ok, any parents would be more than happy to hear those words.

My Message to all students number one if your angry do something. Sign the petition I have set up, which you can view at http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/yesoncellphones Spread the word write to your schools, elected officals, the board of ed we can do something about it, but it's up to you!

seatouch3:14am: for anyone in the "new england" area
any volunteer drivers and carpoolers?

hey everybody,

this message might be off topic but it can help a lot of people, so i'm asking that it's kept on the journal. understandable if it needs to be edited out and all, but i urge you to give a quick read before making a decision.

i'm going to build homes with habitat for humanity in the new orleans area. there are groups of activists going down in june for 5-day blocks. (i was thinking about staying 5-15 days). if anyone is interested in going please let me know - the bigger the group, the lesser the expenses, the better job done. collaboration would be awesome, especially if someone has a car - gas would be much less expensive than a flight+rental/cabs. this is an independent volunteering/activism project available for anyone able to come help out, but time and space is limited so please get back to me asap if it sounds like something you'd be interested in. habitat for humanity asks for a $20/night donations, which aren't necessary but encouraged (I won't be paying the maximum .. poor college student). So anyway, if you want to come on the flight, or have a car, and want to come down with a group to do something progressive for our {sick} society - get back to me! or e-mail me at nbose@ic.sunysb.edu.

(additional benefits are a great tan, good workout, new friends, and a new orleans vacation ;) the u.s. government wanted to cut grants to organizers building for katrina recovery - programs for which are difficult and time-consuming to get into.. so independent volunteering is really needed.)

i do run an activist organization called the social justice alliance at stony brook university.. just so you don't think i'm a weirdo looking to scam a hot date..

The FBI has gained new powers to demand documents from companies without a judge's approval, as well as the ability to designate subpoenas as secret and punish disclosure of their existence with up to one year in prison."

Forget scaling back the Patriot Act.

Instead, the controversial post-9/11 law would be expanded to give the FBI new powers to demand documents from companies without a judge's approval, according to a vote late Tuesday by the Senate Intelligence committee.

GOVERNMENT REFORM LOBBY DAY:

  •  MAY 3RD, FROM 10AM TO 2PM AT THE LEGISLATIVE OFFICE BUILDING IN ALBANY
  • FOCUSED ON IMPLEMENTING ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION IN NEW YORK STATE
  • HOSTED BY NYPIRG AND AN ASSORTMENT OF OTHER GOOD GOVERNMENT GROUPS
  • ALL ARE WELCOME TO COME DISCUSS THIS CRITICAL ISSUE WITH THEIR REPRESENTATIVES

Please let me know ahead of time if you would like to come, because, most likely, transportation to and from Albany can be arranged for you.

This event is absolutely FREE, and a great oppertunity to discuss this important issue with your legislators. If you have concerns, or would like to come to the lobby day but also like to meet separately with your representatives to discuss something else of importance to you, just let me know and I'll take care of it.

I'll also post a reminder closer to May 3rd.

cosmopolitenne4:59pm: Hi!
I'm currently completing my Master's in adolescent education at a Long Island-based university, but I was active in NYPIRG about...ehhhh...three years ago when I attended Nassau Community College.

I just thought I'd join the community, see what's up in the world of NYPIRG - I quite enjoyed and valued my time as a part of the organization & may become involved again when my life calms down a little.

abysmallucidity3:23am: student housing surveys
Hey all. Oswego is having our spring break but for consumer rights we are currently working with the Student Association on student housing surveys that we will compile into a book where students can search for information about certain landlords and houses or apartments. So far we have gotten a great deal of them turned in with ease.

Conference and lobby day sounded great. I wished that I could have gone but, unfortunetly, I have not much money so it wasn't an option. But I'm glad everyone enjoyed.

And to whoever posted the New Paltz article, thanks. That's great to hear.

abysmallucidity2:35pm: hey nypirgers!!!
The second semester has commenced. This semester I am a Project Leader for Consumer Rights. Here's some of the stuff we are working on in Oswego consumer:

Book Exchange- students sell their books by filling out book exchange cards and delivering them to the NYPIRG office or doing it online without the retail markups.

Payday Lending- Payday Lending is small loans for people in a financial bind. They reqired no credit check or collateral but these cash loans hike up interest rates of 390-780%. We are working on The Campaign to End Payday Lending in New York

Wireless Project- a "Cell Phone Bill of Rights" that will enable you to keep your cellphone number even if you switch plans as well as assessing customer satisfaction with their cell phone, wireless provider and contract.

Banking & playground surveys

What projects are yall starting up again in other chapters?
